Photography Challenge “The Burning House”

THE BURNING HOUSE”: WHAT WOULD YOU SAFE IF YOUR HOUSE WAS ON FIRE?

Flipping through the newspaper today I see this headline: “The millionaire who gives everything and lives with 15 objects”. It got my attention, so I decided to have a look. This was the first paragraph:

"If your house suddenly caught on fire, what would you grab as you fled out the door? That’s precisely the question Foster Huntington asked herself and  posted in her blog The Burning House in 2011. She gathered her belongings she herself would take and photographed them, then asked a few friends to do the same. Her blog, considered by the Times magazine one of the best blogs of 2012, has inspired many people to think, photograph, and share their most valuable belongings"

Huntington writes in the introduction:
“Today, developed countries are consuming more than ever before. This culture of consumption is often fueled by people’s desire to define themselves by the possessions they amass. The Burning House: What Would You Take? takes a different approach to personal definition. By removing easily replaceable objects and instead focusing on things unique to them, people are able to capture their personalities in a photograph.”
Here is part of the article:

“Last April, the most bizarre self-help guru in New York, James Altucher had a similar revelation. Only that his house did not burn. And he did not pictures of what remained.
He simply took 15 things in a sports bag and left. The rest, including his apartment, donated or thrown away.

Three shirts, three pairs of pants, two shorts, two pairs of socks, two shoes, a bag of frozen plastic zip with $ 4,000 in bills two, a laptop and an iPad. All in a black sports bag. Since then, he has been sleeping on his friends' couches or in rented appartments. Altucher’s reinvention has the peculiarity that is absolutely voluntary. He was a millionaire twice and he ruined in both occasions, but after recovering his fortune, he decided to deny everything he had achieved, and get rid of it. What is curious is that in Altucher’s list there is nothing personal. No family photos, or travel souvenirs or gifts, nothing. Just enough for day to day.

Pragmatism with message, yes. Because a guru is nothing without founding a movement, and a movement is nothing without a name. Minimalism. That’s how he calls his new life.”

Today I was thinking about this article while I was moving all my things to a new room on campus. I was surprised of the amount of clothes, shoes, books that I had stored on my room.

-Oh man… I have 7 different jeans, 5 different pairs of running shoes…why do I have some many things?!

After moving all my stuff, I googled “The burning house” and I found some really cool pictures! Some of them were from the article (which has become a bestseller) and some others came from people who, after reading the book, have also decided to photograph their most valuable belongins.

But before you see the photos…

THINK ABOUT WHAT IS MOST VALUABLE TO YOU.

WHAT 15 THINGS WOULD YOU SAVE IF YOUR HOUSE WAS ON FIRE?

It is not easy to get rid of our things right?

“Focusing on things unique to us, things that define us, we are able to capture our personality in one picture.”

Now have a look and get some inspiration!

And well, HERE is mine!

If my house was on fire… First I SAVE my running shoes! haha. These HOKAS are awesome!! =)
In my list I have:
·        my passport,
·        credit card,
·        my diary,
·        the silver chain my dad gave me (with the shark tooth from Ecuador),
·        my smartphone + headphones,
·        my little bag that has always been with me the last 2 years,
·        my portable hard drive…
·        and I almost forgot my toothbrush and my contact lents!
It makes a total of 11.

I CHALLENGE YOU NOW

What 10-15 things would you save if you house was on fire?

Top 3 easy morning runs in Cleveland, MS

- TOP 3 EASY MORNING RUNS IN CLEVELAND, MS -

Planning on visiting Cleveland? Awesome!
Get ready for a big city, the night life, the skyscrapers...
Oh, wait a second... What Cleveland are you talking about?

Just in the US there are 18 different cities named Cleveland. Crazy right? Well, that's nothing. Did you know that the most common name for a US city/town/village is Washington, repeated... 88 times. These americans are either running out of imagination or running out of names for their cities!

I live in Cleveland... Mississippi.
It's one of the smallest towns in US... and it is awesome.
On it's own way :)

So what to do in a small town after finishing your classes and homework?

Do you like... running?
Of course you do! :)

There is definitely not much to do in Cleveland.
After classes and homework you have several different options. The best ways to have fun are...

  1. Hang out with friends,
  2. Play videogames / watch TV
  3. Go to the gym
  4. Netflix...
  5. ...

There is even a funny saying here: KEEP CLEVELAND BORING
Nothing else to add

I am a runner and I love to spend time outdoors. I am used to running in a big city like Madrid, Spain (my home and home of millions of people) its streets, its parks, its mountains... so it is being kind of hard for me to get used this place again. I am totally sure that people here don't know what the word uphill / downhill mean

Cleveland it is TOTALLY FLAT and the weather conditions are definitely harder. Actually, it is almost as hot as in Madrid around this time of the year, but here it is extremely humid so running becomes almost mission impossible during the day.

Well if you are you also a runner and you are you ready to want to unveil some of wonders that a small town like Cleveland has stored for you...

Then check my TOP 3 PLACES to go for an EASY MORNING RUN here in Cleveland, Mississippi;

PD 2: don't play golf with Gandalf... he always cheats

THAT'S ME RIGHT THERE!

RIO 2016 - Olympic Records Discussion

ARE YOU WATCHING THE OLYMPICS?!

More than 50 World Records have been broken so far and there are still 7 days left!
What records will be broken this year?
Michael Phelps has already 27 medals and Usain Bolt still has to run the 100mts

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_and_Olympic_records_set_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics#Olympic_and_World_records_set_by_sport

Have a look at the times now. Swimming races are usually defined by just some tenths or hundredths of a second. That's why they are so fun to watch. I have many swimming friends in my college Delta State University, MS and they tell me how hard it is to improve your time just a second

Ok.

Dear Katie Ledecky:
Congrats for your win yesterday in the 800m final in Rio. Were you even nervous? You are already a five-time Olympic gold medalist, 9 time World Champion, and current World-record holder in the women's 400, 800, and 1500m freestyle. Don't you think it is time to swim against the man?
Please tell me where are you from. I won't tell anybody.
I know... from US... Superman also is "from US"

PD: Please tell me what do you have for breakfast

Guille

This is happening not only in swimming. Thanks to the Olympics we can see how athletes are running and swimming faster, jumping higher and getting stronger every year.
Every year, records in all sports are getting broken. There is a undeniable progression every year. A few years ago I don't think people thought that a man could run 100m under 9.6 seconds (Usain Bolt run in 9.58) or that a single man could win 27 medals (Phelps - 27 - today... 08/13/2016)
If we keep going like this, how many records will be broken in the next 5 or 10 years?
Where is the human limit?

What record are YOU more excited about to see being broken?
Who are YOU most excited about this Olympics?

I am personally super excited to see Rafa Nadal winning the GOLD medal in singles (he won the gold in doubles yesterday)

Thanks for reading! Please leave your OPINION AND COMMENT
See you in the next post!
